The young girls had been kidnapped at gun point, by six men, in the remote village of Bab Kot. The girls were thrown into a Land Cruiser jeep, with a Balochistan government number plate and taken to a field, beaten, shot and then flung into a ditch. When the mother and aunty of the girls protested to the treatment and attempted to halt the men, the two older women were also thrust into the ditch. The five women were still alive and breathing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though seriously injured, when they were covered with mud and rocks, in what relatives described as 'honour killings'.
The British High Commission in Dhaka reports that it aided 56 forced marriage cases between the months of April 2007 and March 2008.
For most young girls in the free world,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they feel it is their unqualified right to pick and choose their partner, the only risk being for it to end up in failure in a divorce court. Yet for millions of women throughout the nations of Asia, Africa and the Middle East, the right to choose is a highly lethal alternative, which threatens their lives. 'No' is not an option for these women, as they are pressured by families, into the hugely unreported global horror of forced marriages. In some cases it is also believed that some men are also pressed into forced marriages.
Humayra Abedin aged 32, a British trained doctor, who has resided in Britain for the past 6 years, was forced into captivity by her family, as they forced her into marriage with a complete stranger. Humayra had been told by her family that her mother was seriously ill. On returning to Bangladesh Humayara was thrust into captivity by her parents, after being manhandled on her arrival. All her travel documents and credit cards were confiscated and she was locked in a room, constantly guarded by four or five men. Humayra was injected with what she said were anti-psychotic drugs and mood stabilizers. She was then forced to go through a marriage ceremony against her will.
There are no figures available of how many pre-adolescent children have been forced into arranged marriages, but the number is believed to be very high.
Education has only had limited success in cutting across these customs and traditions, as the victims are usually emotionally, socially and economically dependent on the family. Sadly, most countries do not have a ruling on forced marriages.
It is believed hundreds of women are killed by male relatives each year, throughout Pakistan, for taking the bold step of trying to resolve their own future. In 2005 it is reported that 174 women were victims, 270 in 2006 and 280 in 2007. The figure stood at 107 in just the first five months of 2008.

Being a resident of Britain,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Humayra came under the jurisdiction of the recently passed Forced Marriage Act. A Bangladesh court sympathetically ruled that Humayra was held against her will and should be permitted to go free. Humayra returned to England, four months after being captured by her family.
A 23 year old woman was shot three times in the head, by her brother, when she dared to divorce the man her parents had forced her to marry.

Girls as young as 8 years old are married off in India, by their families.
The burial place of the victims have not been located and very few of the perpetrators of these violent murders are apprehended or convicted.
The father of an eight year-old Saudi Arabian girl married her off to a 58 year-old man. A judge made the ruling that the young girl could not apply for a divorce until she reaches puberty. The girl is still living with her mother, but the estranged father set a verbal condition that the marriage could not be consummated until the child is 18 years old. However, there is no guarantee this will be the actual case.
A survey recently reported that 3000 women fall victims to forced marriages in Britain, with little or no rights once married.

Bangladesh Doctor Held Captive By Her Family
Three girls were taken into the desert by Umrani tribesmen. They were punished and buried alive, as a deterrent for anyone else attempting to get married through their own choice.
